We’ve all come used to Samsung’s One UI. The Samsung Galaxy M31s ships with One UI 2.0 based on Android 10 out of the box. Given that Android 10 has been out for about 6 months now, that shouldn’t be a surprise though. Keeping that aside, it’s great to see Samsung offer a software experience that’s quite similar to it’s more expensive phones like the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Lite.

One UI 2.0 has been kept making reachability in mind, and features like Dark Mode, Always On Display, Ultra Data Saving, and Dual Messenger add further value to the package. Despite bloatware, the Samsung Galaxy M31s still manages to deliver a software experience that isn’t diluted by interspersed ads. You’ll just have to be a bit wary during the setup process so as to not install unwanted applications or get unwanted notifications.

The Samsung Galaxy M31s is powered by Samsung’s own Exynos 9611 chipset. It’s the same chipset that you find on the Samsung Galaxy M31s, the Galaxy A50s, and more. It’s safe to say that the Exynos 9611 is probably the chipset that you’ll find in most of Samsung’s budget phones

The Exynos 9611 is a tried-and-tested SoC and it’s very good at handling a mid-range phone. So the Samsung Galaxy M31s run smoothly for day-to-day usage with little to no lags or stutters. The software is still a bit for this SoC, so you might notice a few hiccups while switching between the apps. You get 6GB RAM on both 64GB as well as the 128GB variant of the phone. I haven’t faced any issues with multitasking.

Final Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy M31s is a reliable smartphone that makes use of a great AMOLED display, has a great battery backup, and has a versatile set of cameras. But when it comes to intensive tasks like gaming, you’ll be better off choosing the POCO X2 or the Redmi Note 8 Pro that are probably the best phones for gaming in this segment.

Another aspect where the Samsung Galaxy M31s lacks is its build quality. In a segment where glass and metal are common, it’s a little unsightly to see Samsung make use of plastic that’s quite susceptible to scratches. But given that most of us slap on a case, this is something that can be put down.

So, if you’re looking for a budget phone that comes through on most fundamental requirements like display, battery, software, and cameras, the Samsung Galaxy M31s is definitely a phone you should consider. But if you’re looking for more bang-for-buck and better gaming performance, I’d suggest you have a look at the smartphones mentioned above.
